Is there a size limit for map sent to PDA?

Postby terrypin » Sun Sep 06, 2009 5:40 am

Several large maps that I sent with Mobile Device > Send Visible Map Portion or Mobile Device > Send Map failed to open on my device (HTC Touch Pro 2). They gave error messages about being unable to open. This was true whether I sent to my storage card or internal memory. Yet if the same QCT files (around 34 MB) were sent to my PC, they could be opened OK.

Smaller 12 MB portions from the same map, do open OK on the device.

Is there some size limit causing this? Any other explanation? It's disappointing because now that I have a 16 GB card on my new PPC I was planning to put some very large maps on it for convenience.

Best wishes,

Further tests seem to imply an absolute maximum size of about 54 MB - well short of the 400 MB claimed in the sticky!

I emailed UK Support and had the following reply from Jason:

The issue we are having with Windows Mobile 6.1 is that it seems to refuse to open Memory-Map map files that are smaller than the limit set by the Memory-Map Pocket Navigator software. The Memory-Map Pocket Navigator software has a file size limit of 400MB per map file, however we have found some Windows Mobile 6.1 devices will not open map files of sizes greater than 100MB. This unfortunately changes between devices and as such we are unable to supply an answer telling customers the maximum map size they are able to use on a particular Windows Mobile 6.1 device.

The reason for this issue is that Microsoft have changed something in the way that the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system handles data and threads the available system resources (CPU, RAM, and ROM) to software applications.
As I am sure you understand Microsoft are quite unwilling to change their operating system back to how it was in Windows Mobile 6.0 or Windows Mobile 5.0 (that Memory-Map Pocket Navigator software worked fine with), as such we are currently working on ways in which to be able to use larger map files on the Windows Mobile 6.1 devices. This however is not an easy task, as it involves changing the entire Memory-Map .QCT file structure and the entire way in which the Memory-Map .QCT files are handled by the Memory-Map Pocket Navigator software (.QCT is our propriety map file format).

I'm still unclear whether any PPC that uses WM 6.1 has this problem? Any other WM 6.1 users with feedback please?

Terry

I have been tearing my hair out today trying to get my 50K region maps running on my HTC Touch Pro2. I have registered copies of MM5 and Navigator (for self-calibrated fieldwork maps). I even bought a Transcend class 6 16GB SDHC to try to help things along. I couldn't understand why the maps work fine on my Loox PDA (WM6) but not on the phone. A quick search found your post and it has answered my question. My remaining hair will now remain attached! I'm mightily annoyed at this situation. I wonder if upgrading to WM 6.5 would work? I see it has just come out on the HTC website recently although, at the moment, I can't face flashing my phone. Looks like, in the meantime, I'll have to split my 50k maps. Arghhhh.....
Again - thanks for researching this problem.

Cheers

I've tried loading maps onto my Toshiba TG01 which is running Windows 6.5 and can confirm that smaller size maps are ok, larger ones don't open. Haven't worked out the maximum size yet but I know a 92Mb map does not open on my system.
Cheers Microsoft, you twats.

Further to my above post - I found that some maps that were loaded and working one day would not load the next day. This seems to be a problem with my windows mobile memory getting full (with other aps). I've found that turning off and on my phone will help clear memory and that the maps will then load ok. I've now managed to get a 92Mb map (Peak District in England) loaded ok. My mobile has 256Mb RAM and I imagine different devices will have different map size limitations.
Strange how MM was ok on my old mobile with 128Mb.

I am running Memory-Map OS Edition 2004 version 4.4.3 build 565 on a HTC Touch HD2 running WM 6.5 Professional and it will open maps up to 175 Mb even after the phone has been running several days

I'm using Toshiba TG01
Windows Mobile 6.5
MM version 5.1.3 build 716

On a clean reset I can open a 120MB map (Lake District) but not a 137MB map (GB Road Atlas).
I'm going to roll back to an earlier version of Memory Map to see if it makes a difference...

Well, tried version 4.2.3 build 432 and it was no better. In fact it was worse as the maps were rendered in a lower resolution looking very ugly, both in 3D view on the computer and on the TG01 (800 x 640 screen).

So I'm now back to MM 5.1.3, still limited with the map sizes but at least they are looking good again. Maybe different devices have different memory management?

Toshiba has released an updated ROM ( on 18th March I think) and this gives a greater success rate at opening larger maps. I can usually open my largest map now (GB Road Atlas 137MB) without problem even when the phones been running a while opening and closing programs. It sometimes refuses though, but after closing all apps it seems to work again ok.
