Further tests seem to imply an absolute maximum size of about 54 MB - well short of the 400 MB claimed in the sticky!
I emailed UK Support and had the following reply from Jason:
The issue we are having with Windows Mobile 6.1 is that it seems to refuse to open Memory-Map map files that are smaller than the limit set by the Memory-Map Pocket Navigator software. The Memory-Map Pocket Navigator software has a file size limit of 400MB per map file, however we have found some Windows Mobile 6.1 devices will not open map files of sizes greater than 100MB. This unfortunately changes between devices and as such we are unable to supply an answer telling customers the maximum map size they are able to use on a particular Windows Mobile 6.1 device.
The reason for this issue is that Microsoft have changed something in the way that the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system handles data and threads the available system resources (CPU, RAM, and ROM) to software applications.
As I am sure you understand Microsoft are quite unwilling to change their operating system back to how it was in Windows Mobile 6.0 or Windows Mobile 5.0 (that Memory-Map Pocket Navigator software worked fine with), as such we are currently working on ways in which to be able to use larger map files on the Windows Mobile 6.1 devices. This however is not an easy task, as it involves changing the entire Memory-Map .QCT file structure and the entire way in which the Memory-Map .QCT files are handled by the Memory-Map Pocket Navigator software (.QCT is our propriety map file format).
I'm still unclear whether any PPC that uses WM 6.1 has this problem? Any other WM 6.1 users with feedback please?
